Most people know hydrolat as hydrosol or floral water 花水. However, Hydrolat comes from more than just the flowers of the plant – hydrolat can be from flowers, roots, bark, branches, wood, needles, leaves, fruits and seeds can all be used in producing hydrolat. Hydrolats are the condensed water produced during the steam or hydro-distillation of the plant material. It can be coproduced with the essential oil 精華油 but can also be produced on its own. Its properties can be very different to the essential oil produced with the same plant material though, which means, essential oil in water doesn’t make it the hydrolat / hydrosol.
Hydrolats for your Skin in Winter
A great combo hydrolat to keep your face moisten and refreshing: Rose hydrolat and Rock Rose hydrolat.
Rock Rose (Cistus ladaniferus) 岩玫瑰：Rock Rose may not be chosen for its aroma, which will pop out from the beauty counter, but it purifies the skin, smoothing fine lines. Yes, smoothing fine lines – or anti-wrinkling!
Rose Damasca 大馬士革玫瑰：Rose hydrolat is highly soothing to the smell (its fragrance is always top notch), to the skin and its soothing to all skin types (normal, dry and sensitive). It calms allergic reactions and it is very tonifying. It is regenerating and anti-aging.
Combining both Rock Rose and Rose hydrolat to keep your skin moist, regenerating and wrinkle free as well as very aromatic. You can keep them as a mist spray or use as a daily mask. Remember to only choose organic or chemical free hydrosol though.
For those planning on big parties during the holidays, the Rock Rose & Rose hydrosols will be your best saviour! Happy Holidays!
